Oven Bake Igniter
In Viking gas ranges, the bake igniter is a high-wear silicon carbide or nitride component. Over time, the material develops micro-fractures, increasing electrical resistance until it can no longer draw the amperage required to trigger the bimetal gas safety valve. Because the broil circuit uses a separate igniter, the broiler remains functional while the bake circuit fails to ignite.

Bake Heating Element
For electric configurations, the bake element is subject to extreme thermal expansion and contraction cycles. The internal resistive wire eventually oxidizes or snaps, resulting in an open circuit. Since the broiler uses a separate heating element at the top of the cavity, its functionality is independent of a failed lower bake element.

Oven Thermostat Control
The mechanical thermostat or selector switch manages the routing of current to specific heating circuits. If the internal contact points for the 'Bake' setting have carbonized or warped, the circuit will not close, preventing the bake system from receiving power while allowing the 'Broil' contacts to function normally.
