Cylinder Head Gasket

The head gasket serves as the primary seal between the water jacket and the combustion chambers. A breach in this gasket allows coolant to be drawn into the cylinder during the intake stroke or pushed into the cylinder during the compression stroke, resulting in white steam exiting the exhaust. This is common after an overheat event or due to material fatigue.

Cylinder Head Assembly

If the engine experienced a significant overheat, the aluminum cylinder head can warp or develop microscopic stress cracks. A warped head will not maintain a seal even with a new gasket, and a cracked head provides a direct path for coolant to enter the exhaust ports, bypassing the combustion chamber but still creating white smoke.

Exhaust Manifold Gasket

The exhaust manifold is water-jacketed to manage temperatures. If the gasket between the manifold and the cylinder head fails, or if the manifold itself develops an internal crack, water can be introduced directly into the exhaust gas path, creating steam that appears as white smoke.
