Roomba i-Series Front Bumper Assembly

The front bumper shell acts as the mechanical interface for the obstacle sensors. Error 9 occurs when the bumper cannot return to its neutral position due to physical warping, broken internal retention tabs, or debris lodged in the pivot points. Replacing the full assembly ensures the bumper has a clean range of motion and clears the IR sensor window.

If the bumper moves freely but Error 9 persists, the internal infrared (IR) sensors are faulty. These sensors detect bumper compression by monitoring light continuity; a failed IR LED or receiver will report a 'stuck' bumper state to the main logic board regardless of physical position.

Precision Electronic Contact Cleaner

Dust accumulation inside the bumper's sensor housing can occlude the IR light path. If the hardware is not physically broken, a targeted cleaning of the internal sensor array and the bumper's translucent plastic window can restore signal integrity and clear the fault.
