Radial Shaft Seal Set

The MS 271 is prone to premature failure of the crankshaft oil seals, particularly on the clutch side. When these seals fail, the engine loses the internal vacuum necessary to pulse the carburetor's fuel pump; the saw will start on the fuel provided by the choke but die once it requires a steady pump pulse. Replacing these seals restores the airtight integrity of the crankcase.

Fuel Hose

Small cracks or 'pinholes' in the rubber fuel line can cause the engine to suck air instead of fuel once the initial priming pressure drops. This model's fuel line can degrade or become kinked, leading to a lean condition where the engine stalls immediately after the starting cycle finishes.

Intake Manifold Boot

The rubber boot connecting the carburetor to the cylinder can develop tears or lose its seal due to vibration and heat. A tear in this boot introduces 'unmetered air' into the combustion chamber, leaning out the fuel-air mixture to the point that the engine cannot maintain an idle and dies as soon as the throttle is released.
