Outdoor Unit Run Capacitor

A degraded run capacitor causes the compressor motor to operate at a higher slip-rate and increased amperage, leading to excessive heat generation within the windings. This triggers the internal thermal overload, resulting in the 'Code 81' thermal lockout. Replacing the capacitor restores proper phase shift and motor efficiency.

Condenser Fan Motor

If the fan motor fails to maintain the correct RPM in low stage, the refrigerant cannot effectively reject heat at the condenser coil. This leads to high head pressures and elevated compressor temperatures, eventually tripping the thermal protection. A new motor ensures adequate airflow to prevent thermal stacking.

Compressor Thermal Overload Switch

In some configurations, an external thermal switch monitors the compressor shell temperature. If this switch becomes hypersensitive or develops internal resistance, it will prematurely signal a lockout even if the compressor is within safe operating parameters.
