Carburetor Assembly
The primary cause of a 'locked' cord is hydro-lock, where a faulty float needle valve allows gasoline to flood the cylinder. Because fuel cannot be compressed, the piston stops during the compression stroke, mechanically preventing the recoil cord from extending. Replacing the carburetor ensures the fuel shut-off mechanism is restored, preventing fluid ingress into the combustion chamber.

Recoil Starter Assembly
Physical failure of the internal plastic pawls or the recoil spring can cause the starter rope to jam within the housing. If the cord will not move at all even when the cylinder is clear, the pawls have likely failed to retract or have become wedged against the starter cup on the flywheel. A complete assembly replacement is the only reliable fix for a distorted or tangled recoil spring.

Spark Plug
When an engine experiences hydro-lock or flooding severe enough to lock the pull cord, the spark plug electrodes become saturated with fuel and oil (fouled). Even after the liquid is cleared from the cylinder, the plug's ceramic insulator often develops a carbon track or the gap is bridged, preventing the necessary spark for ignition once mechanical movement is restored.
