The MTD-designed pins feature specific engineered shear grooves matched to the gearbox's torque limits. Using generic bolts or the wrong grade causes pins to either fail prematurely under the weight of wet snow or fail to break at all, destroying the gearbox. The associated nylon locknuts must not be over-tightened, as compressing the auger tube against the shaft creates friction that pre-stresses the pin.

Snowblower Skid Shoes

Worn or improperly adjusted skid shoes allow the auger housing to drop too low, causing the rotating auger blades to frequently strike the pavement or pick up gravel. These high-impulse impact events generate instantaneous torque spikes that exceed the shear pin's yield point, even if the user does not notice a large obstruction.
