The S4 Mk3 uses a motorized BLDC motor to provide variable platter tension. A heavy feel suggests a failure in the motor's internal coils or a breakdown of the electromagnetic feedback loop that manages resistance, causing the permanent magnets to create high cogging torque.

The haptic motors require a dedicated 15V power source to operate; when the unit is underpowered (running on USB bus power only), the motors default to a high-resistance state.
