Exhaust Valve Actuator (e-RAVE Servo)

The e-RAVE servo controls the exhaust valve positioning; if it fails to open the valves at high RPM, the engine cannot effectively scavenge exhaust gases. This results in unburnt fuel being forced into the tuned pipe and igniting, creating a characteristic high-RPM backfire or 'bog.' Replacing the actuator restores the physical timing of the exhaust port cycles.

At high RPM and high cylinder pressure, the ignition system requires maximum voltage to jump the plug gap. A fouled or worn electrode may fail to ignite the charge under these conditions (spark blowout), causing raw fuel to enter the hot exhaust manifold and detonate, which presents as a backfire.

RAVE Valve Service Kit

Heavy carbon accumulation on the exhaust valve slides can cause mechanical binding that the servo motor cannot overcome. If the valves stick in the 'low' position while the engine is at high RPM, the resulting exhaust restriction causes a disruption in the pressure wave, leading to combustion instability and backfiring.
