SimpliSafe base stations rely on four AA NiMH rechargeable batteries for backup power. Over 3-5 years, these cells lose their ability to maintain a charge; when the system detects a high internal resistance or low voltage during its self-test, it triggers a red trouble light to indicate the system is no longer secure during power outages.
