Dryer Thermistor
The thermistor is a Negative Temperature Coefficient resistor that signals the drum temperature to the control board. If the internal ceramic semi-conductor shorts or degrades to a low-resistance state, the board interprets this as a temperature exceeding 300 degrees Fahrenheit. This results in an immediate safety shutdown and the HE/HC error code even if the dryer is physically cold.
