Pilot Assembly with Thermopile and Electrode

The pilot assembly contains the thermopile which generates the millivoltage required to hold the gas valve open. Over time, soot accumulation or oxidation of the junction leads to insufficient voltage output, causing the control module to signal a lockout or status error. Replacing the entire assembly ensures a clean flame-to-sensor interface and restores the signal to the gas control valve.

Gas Control Valve (Thermostat)

If the status light indicates a single flash fault (distinct from the heartbeat), it often signifies that the internal NTC thermistor has failed or the magnetic head operator within the valve is no longer responding to the thermopile's millivoltage. This component is a sealed unit; if the internal electronics cannot verify the presence of a pilot or water temperature, the valve must be replaced as a single assembly.

Flammable Vapor Sensor

The vapor sensor is a safety resistor that changes value in the presence of hydrocarbons or high humidity. On many Rheem/Honeywell platforms, a specific single-flash lockout can be triggered by the control board sensing an out-of-range resistance from this sensor, effectively disabling the burner to prevent potential ignition of external vapors.
