The analog stick utilizes a potentiometer with a wiper that moves across a resistive carbon track to signal position. Over time, friction causes the wiper to shave off microscopic carbon particles or allows environmental dust to enter the housing, which creates erratic resistance readings interpreted by the PCB as 'drift'. A specialized non-flammable electronic contact cleaner dissolves these contaminants and flushes the carbon shedding out of the gimbal housing, restoring the intended voltage-divider relationship.
