The Nest base contains an integrated power management PCB and spring-loaded terminals that can suffer from mechanical fatigue or internal component failure. If the internal logic fails to detect the 24VAC potential between Rc and C, it will trigger a software lockout even if the HVAC system is functional. This is a known pattern failure where the base fails to pass current to the display unit.

Condensate Overflow Float Switch

In most modern HVAC installations, a safety float switch is wired in series with the Rc wire. When the primary condensate drain line becomes obstructed by biological growth or debris, the rising water level lifts a magnetic float, opening the electrical contact and immediately severing the 24VAC path to the thermostat to prevent structural water damage.

3-Amp/5-Amp Automotive Blade Fuse

The HVAC control board utilizes a low-voltage fuse to protect the transformer from overcurrent conditions. A momentary short-to-ground during thermostat replacement or a power surge can cause the internal filament of this fuse to melt, creating a physical air gap in the circuit and resulting in a total loss of power to the Rc wire.
