The Marshall Origin series employs a logic-switched FX loop that is 'Normally Off'. Without the latching ground signal provided by the specific footswitch, the internal relay cannot energize to route the signal through the Send/Return jacks, appearing as a circuit failure to the user.

The FX loop utilize switching jacks with internal leaf-spring contacts (shunts). Mechanical fatigue or atmospheric oxidation on the 'Return' jack's shunt prevents the pre-amp signal from returning to the power amp stage when the loop is engaged, breaking the series signal chain.
