Water Inlet Valve
The water inlet valve utilizes an electromagnetic solenoid to overcome spring tension and open a diaphragm. Over time, the solenoid coil can suffer an internal short or open circuit, or mineral deposits can seize the pilot valve. When this occurs, the valve fails to actuate during the 7.5-second signal provided by the ice maker module, resulting in no water delivery to the tray.

Modular Ice Maker Assembly
The ice maker module contains a synchronous motor and a series of timing cams that physicaly close contacts to send 120V to the water valve. If the copper traces on the module's circuit board or the physical contacts for the 'fill' portion of the cycle are pitted or charred, the signal will never reach the valve. Replacing the entire assembly is the standard forensic resolution due to the non-serviceable nature of the internal cams.

Refrigerator Water Filter
The water inlet valve is pilot-operated, meaning it requires a minimum of 20 PSI of line pressure to physically push the diaphragm open. A bypass or carbon block filter that has become saturated with sediment creates a significant pressure drop. If the pressure falls below the mechanical threshold required by the valve, the solenoid may hum but will be unable to overcome the internal pressure differential to allow water flow.
