Compressor Start Relay and Overload Assembly

The PTC start relay contains a ceramic disc that provides a momentary electrical path to the compressor's start winding. When this disc fractures, the compressor cannot generate the torque required to start, leading to high current draw. The 'click' is the bi-metal overload protector tripping to prevent motor winding damage.

Compressor Run Capacitor

The capacitor provides the necessary phase shift to the motor windings to initiate rotation. If the capacitor's dielectric material fails or the capacitance drops below the threshold required for high-torque starting, the compressor will stall and trigger the overload protector's audible click.

Hard Start Kit (Relay/Capacitor Combo)

In aging units, internal friction or 'tight' bearings within the compressor may prevent standard start components from initiating movement. A hard start kit provides an extra boost of current and torque to overcome mechanical resistance in a failing compressor assembly.
