The most common failure mode is a restricted main jet or emulsion tube caused by ethanol fuel degradation. This allows the engine to fire on the enrichment/choke circuit but starves it of fuel as soon as the initial combustion cycle requires a steady flow through the main circuit, causing it to die. Replacing the assembly is the standard engineering fix because the internal ports are too small for reliable manual cleaning.

Thermowax Choke Actuator

If the thermowax plunger is sticking or the thermal putty is preventing full travel, the automatic choke may open too rapidly or fail to close properly. This creates an incorrect air-fuel ratio immediately after startup, leading the engine to lean out and stall as it attempts to transition from a cold-start state to an operating state.

Carburetor Gasket Kit

Air leaks at the insulator or carburetor mounting flange will lean out the mixture. If the gaskets have shrunk or degraded, the engine may start on a rich choke mixture but die once the vacuum leak prevents a proper metered fuel charge from entering the combustion chamber.
