Black Lid Ribbon Cable
The black lid ribbon cable is a multi-conductor flexible circuit that spans the hinge of the machine and is subjected to repeated mechanical cycling. Over time, the internal copper traces suffer from fatigue-induced fracturing at the stress point where the lid pivots. This breakage interrupts the safety interlock signal, causing the machine to report the lid as open even when physically closed.

Lid Interlock Magnets
The Glowforge utilizes magnetic sensors to detect the closed state of the lid and front door. If the internal magnets have shifted due to adhesive failure or if the chassis is slightly torqued (not level), the magnetic field may fail to trigger the Hall effect sensors. This prevents the completion of the interlock circuit required for operation.
