Z-Axis Optical Limit Switch

The optical limit switch is responsible for halting the Z-axis motor when the carriage reaches the 'Home' position. If the sensor fails to trigger due to a faulty infrared receiver or a misaligned 'flag,' the firmware will continue to drive the stepper motor against the LCD glass, causing the gears and motor to skip and produce a loud grinding noise.

This brass or POM component translates the rotational force of the stepper motor into linear motion. If the internal threads are stripped or contaminated with cured resin, the mechanical resistance becomes greater than the motor's holding torque, resulting in the motor stalling and vibrating (grinding) against the lead screw threads.

Internal bearing failure or a bent rotor shaft within the motor itself can create mechanical interference. This friction prevents smooth rotation under load, leading to the characteristic rhythmic grinding sound as the magnetic fields attempt to force the rotor past the point of mechanical resistance.
