Variable Speed Trigger Switch Assembly

The variable speed trigger utilizes an electromechanical potentiometer to signal the motor controller. Moisture or fine particulate matter often enters the switch housing, causing oxidation of the contacts or high resistance, which prevents the low-voltage signal from reaching the PCB to initiate motor commutation.

Brushless Motor Controller PCB

The brushless DC (BLDC) motor requires a complex control board to manage phase timing. Thermal stress during heavy use can cause the MOSFETs (Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistors) on the controller to fail, leading to a complete loss of power delivery to the motor windings.

Lower Motor and Head Assembly

On the ST1520S, the motor is housed directly above the trimmer head. If the internal bearings seize or if the stator windings suffer an insulation breakdown (short circuit), the electromagnetic field required for rotation cannot be established, resulting in a locked rotor state.
