HVAC Condensate Float Switch
The float switch is a mechanical safety device installed in the HVAC primary or secondary drain pan. When moisture accumulates due to a blocked condensate line, the float rises and opens a set of electrical contacts wired to the thermostat's 24V power supply. This immediately cuts power to the ecobee, resulting in a blank screen to prevent the system from continuing to generate moisture and causing water damage.

3A / 5A Automotive-style Blade Fuse
Most HVAC control boards utilize a low-voltage fuse to protect the 24VAC transformer from overcurrent. If a power flicker or internal short occurs within the thermostat wiring, the fuse will sacrificialy fail. Once blown, the ecobee loses its return path for power, causing the screen to remain unresponsive until the fuse is replaced.

ecobee Power Extender Kit (PEK)
On systems without a dedicated C-wire, the PEK acts as a multiplexer to provide power over 4-wire setups. If the PEK's internal circuitry fails or a wire terminal loosens due to vibration at the air handler, the thermostat will lose the necessary 24VAC potential to drive the LCD and logic board.
