ecobee Power Extender Kit (PEK)

The Smart Thermostat Enhanced requires a constant 24VAC return path to power its microprocessor and backlit display. If a dedicated Common wire is missing, the device suffers from current starvation during peak loads, leading to the observed screen flicker. This kit creates a reliable virtual common wire by multiplexing the signals over existing wires, stabilizing the voltage rail.

Secondary Condensate Float Switch

This mechanical safety switch is wired in series with the R (Power) terminal; if the HVAC drain line is partially obstructed, the switch may 'flutter' as water levels fluctuate. This rapid mechanical opening and closing of the circuit interrupts power to the thermostat in micro-bursts, manifesting as a strobe-like flicker on the digital display.

24V 40VA HVAC Transformer

Older HVAC systems often use 20VA transformers which are insufficient for modern smart thermostats with Wi-Fi and color LCDs. Under load, an undersized or aging transformer's secondary winding will experience significant voltage sag, failing to maintain the minimum logic-level voltage required for the display driver, resulting in flickering.
