Ecobee Power Extender Kit (PEK)

The PEK is a multiplexing diode/relay module used when a dedicated C-wire is absent. If the internal circuitry of the PEK degrades, it can fail to maintain a stable 24V bridge when the thermostat switches from low-power standby to high-power calibration modes, causing the voltage sag that triggers a reboot.

24V 40VA Transformer

Many older HVAC systems utilize 20VA transformers designed for mercury thermostats. The ecobee requires a higher current load for its sensor array and WiFi communication; an undersized transformer will experience a magnetic saturation failure or voltage drop during peak initialization, preventing the thermostat from completing its calibration cycle.

If the power supply is verified as stable, the loop indicates a logic failure. This typically involves the internal non-volatile memory (NAND) reaching a 'read-only' state due to cell wear, which prevents the device from saving the environmental calibration offsets and forces a system crash and reboot.
