Carburetor Assembly

The internal metering diaphragm in the carburetor becomes stiff over time due to ethanol exposure, losing its ability to pulse and draw fuel from the tank. While the engine may start using the fuel provided by the primer bulb or choke, it fails to maintain a steady flow once the manual prime is consumed. Replacing the full assembly is the standard engineering resolution as internal check valves are non-serviceable.

Fuel Tank Vent

This component allows air to enter the fuel tank to replace the liquid being pumped out. If the internal membrane or ceramic element is clogged, a vacuum forms inside the tank that eventually overcomes the mechanical suction of the carburetor fuel pump. This physics-based restriction starves the engine of fuel after a short period of operation.

Spark Arrestor Screen

Carbon byproduct from 2-stroke combustion accumulates on this fine wire mesh screen located in the muffler. When the screen is sufficiently restricted, exhaust backpressure prevents the engine from pulling in a fresh air-fuel mixture during the intake stroke. This results in the engine starting briefly but stalling as it becomes effectively 'smothered' by its own exhaust gasses.
