The SCX10 III axle housing allows for excessive axial migration of the input pinion gear. Under torque, the pinion shifts forward and the leading edge of the teeth makes contact with the structural shoulder of the ring gear, causing a rhythmic grinding. Installing a 0.2mm shim between the outer pinion bearing and the driveshaft coupler sets the correct gear lash and prevents this metal-on-metal interference.
